OUR EXPERIENCES
The Woodson is Florida’s premier African American museum, dedicated to preserving, presenting, interpreting, celebrating, and educating the public about African American art, history, and culture. The Woodson is both a museum and a mission-driven community institution. The Woodson offers cultural, educational and community services along with signature exhibitions and programs that anchor its role as the leading African American museum in Florida.

ABOUT US
The Woodson is a cultural steward within the community.

Our mission is to:

• Preserve, present, interpret, celebrate, and educate others regarding African American art, history, and culture in Florida and beyond.

• Engage a broad and diverse audience through exhibitions and programs that illuminate African American history.

• Promote understanding among diverse groups to strengthen respect, value diversity, and foster equal rights and social justice.

IMPACT
The Woodson African American Museum of Florida delivers transformational community value by preserving African American history, elevating underrepresented artists, strengthening social equity, and educating future generations.

Its mission-driven governance model supports diverse exhibitions, scholarships, oral histories, and community advocacy. More than a museum, the Woodson serves as a cultural anchor and catalyst, providing exhibition opportunities, awarding educational scholarships, and hosting nationally respected voices who advance dialogue on justice and equity while preserving cultural memory and strengthening intergenerational ties.

The museum also contributes to environmental stewardship through the Legacy Garden, a community-designed green space that supports reflection, outdoor programming, and environmental awareness.

Education is central to its mission, expressed through exhibits, oral history series, author talks, national speakers, and scholarship programs that preserve African American history for present and future generations while promoting cultural literacy, social justice, and community cohesion.
