Cushendale Woollen Mills
OUR EXPERIENCES
Cushendale Woollen Mills is a sixth-generation, family run Irish woollen mill in Graiguenamanagh, Co. Kilkenny, crafting blankets, throws, scarves and yarn from natural fibres. As one of Ireland’s remaining working woollen mills, we carry out the journey from fleece and fibre to finished fabric on site, using generations of knowledge and traditional machinery. Visitors can experience this living craft heritage first-hand through our mill experience, seeing our craftspeople at work, learning how natural fibres are transformed through the different stages of production, and discovering and purchasing products designed and made here at the mill.
ABOUT US
Cushendale Woollen Mills is a sixth-generation family business preserving and evolving Ireland’s woollen-making heritage. From our historic mill in Graiguenamanagh, we transform natural fibres into enduring textiles, combining traditional skills with contemporary design while sustaining local craftsmanship, responsible production and a meaningful connection between people, place and provenance.
IMPACT
Cushendale sustains one of Ireland’s last vertical woollen mills, keeping specialist textile skills, employment and production rooted in rural Graiguenamanagh. Across six generations, knowledge has been passed from maker to maker—today experienced craftspeople work alongside and train the next generation in weaving, spinning and finishing.
We partner directly with farmers across Ireland raising the protected Galway sheep, Ireland’s native breed, and our Irish wool is traceable back to individual farms. From fleece to finished textile, production takes place under one roof.
Our environmental practices include 100% natural fibres, water supplied to our wet processes through an 800-year-old mill race, plastic-free recyclable packaging, certified RWS and OEKO-TEX yarns, and complimentary repair kits that help extend product life.
Through mill visits, travellers witness production first-hand, meet our makers and learn about Irish wool, provenance and skills that might otherwise disappear.
